The city of New Port Richey is looking to bring a whitewater park to the area.

The park would mimic a popular whitewater park in Charlotte, N.C., and would be the first of its kind in Florida.

While the park is likely to be popular with kayakers, officials say it will also be a place where Olympians can train instead of going overseas.

New Port Richey economic development director Mario Iezzoni said construction of the park could cost somewhere between $16 million to $35 million. However, he also said the park would have a significant economic impact on the area.

“You’re looking at the creation of possibly anywhere from 250 jobs similar to what they are doing in Charlotte, and there is a whole ripple effect as a result of that,” he said.

The city is discussing funding options and is in talks with a potential funding source.

Officials are also looking at four different locations for the park.
