A Sarasota man who authorities say left his 2-year-old daughter in a hot car for hours while he slept has been charged with aggravated manslaughter in her death.

Uriel Hernandez, 23, is being held at the Sarasota County Jail without bond.

According to Sarasota police, the child's mother, Valeria Mendoza, told detectives Hernandez picked up the girl around 6 a.m. Sunday, Then, just before noon, Hernandez called the mother to say the child was not responding.

Mendoza rushed to Hernandez's home on the 1500 block of Orange Avenue, calling 911 while en route. The child was rushed to a hospital, where she checked in with a body temperature of 106 degrees, police said. She later died.

"The temperature in the city of Sarasota was between 85 and 95 at the time of the incident," Sarasota polices spokeswoman Genevieve Judge said.

Detectives say they learned Hernandez arrived home with the child, went inside to get a phone charger and fell asleep. The car was parked in the driveway, and detectives believe the girl was left inside for about five hours, Judge said.

A construction worker repaving the road in front of Hernandez's home questioned that story.

"I honestly wouldn't believe that story if he told it to me and actually showed me. 'Cause I'm sorry, it takes 30 seconds to pick up a phone charger and back out to the car,” said Kenneth Hershberger.

Neighbors in the mostly Hispanic community wondered how a tragedy like this could happen.

"How can a parent forget their kid in a car? That's really bad,” said Joselyne Mecias.

"It's very irresponsible for him to leave a child like that. That's a really big responsibility to have a child,” said Jennifer Montoya.

Mendoza is Hernendez's ex-girlfriend. Police have not given the name of the child.

The police department's victim advocate is working with the family to deal with this tragedy.
