People who like to use the Apollo Beach Nature Park could soon see some changes coming to the damaged shoreline.

The county is working with the Apollo Beach Waterway Improvement Group (ABWIG) to stop the erosion and bring back the beach to the area.

The erosion and shifting sands at Apollo Beach makes the area look more like a cliff rather than a place of relaxation.

“There’s very little beach left there,” said ABWIG President Len Berkstresser.

Len Berkstresser and ABWIG plan to construct rock barricades and a jetty to stop the beach from eroding. They are also accepting bids for companies to dredge the area to bring back the sand.

“People’s memories are all they have left, so we want to bring it back for the next generation and we want to put it in a position where it doesn’t erode in the future,” said Berkstresser.

Once the dredging company is chosen at the end of July, the work is expected to begin on the beach toward the end of the year.
