Big changes are planned for a popular Crystal River park, but city leaders say it could come with a fee.

Leaders have been looking at options on how to fix up Hunter Springs Park, including a plan that adds more parking, a boardwalk, a beach and more. But leaders have also been talking about charging for parking and some residents aren't too happy about the idea.

"They should have a different way of bringing in revenue other than reaching into our pockets," said Bruce Budney.

City leaders say the park gets overcrowded and they need to come up with a way to thin out the cars. They say there is plenty of free parking nearby.

Crystal River City Manager David Burnell says it's just an idea right now.

"To really just help eliminate the parking issue that exists there today," Burnell said.

James LaGuidice is a local and he's not happy with the pay to park idea. If it happens, his plan is to park for free and walk.

"Maybe come in and drop the kayak off, we like kayaking, and then park someplace else," he said.

City leaders say there will be more time for public input. Some of the work on the park could start next spring.
