Hernando County deputies said a man’s body ended up in a landfill after a cleaning crew mistook it for a mannequin.

According to deputies, a worker smelled something foul at the West Hernando Transfer Station located at 2525 Osowaw Boulevard in Spring Hill and called authorities.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they located human remains in one of the bins.

According to deputies, the remains are that of former tenant, 33-year-old Jeremy Witfoth, who committed suicide in the garage of a private residence on the 6000 block of Treehaven Drive in Spring Hill.

A cleaning crew arrived at the home Thursday and said they thought the lifelike mannequin was a distasteful "Halloween-like" hoax left by the former renters. They cut the mannequin down, placed it on top of a pile of garbage in the back of the pick-up truck and took it to the landfill.

Deputies said it appears as though Witfoth hung himself sometime within the last several weeks.

His body was in a state of decomposition similar to mummification.

Officials say at this point they don't suspect foul play.
