Pasco-Hernando State College and the Pasco County Sheriff's Office have yet to reach an agreement on how to run the college's police academy.

In an exclusive look inside, Bay News 9 spoke with coordinator Kyle Hughes, who graduated from the program in 1994.

Hughes said that when possible, classes are hands-on in order to prepare students for law enforcement careers. But the program is in danger of shutting down if the college and Sheriff Chris Nocco can't come to an agreement on how to run it together.

Nocco has accused the school of unethical practices and wants one of his own to be in charge of the program. The college agreed to that in its most recent offer, but Nocco said negotiations won't move forward until college officials sit down for a face-to-face meeting.

A college spokesman said administrators are working on scheduling one. The college would like to reach an agreement by Aug. 1, well before the deadline set by the Legislature.

The academy was recently cleared by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement of wrongdoing. Recently, there were complaints about absent instructors and questions removed from tests to help students pass.
