Helma Graham recently celebrated her 110th birthday.

The super-centenarian who lives in Seminole was honored at a birthday party surrounded by generations of family.

"It was beautiful, it was the most beautiful thing you would want to see," Helma said. "They were all there and they all loved me and gave me kisses and flowers and candy."

Helma was born in New York in 1904. Theodore Roosevelt was president. Helma and her husband, George, had a son and ran a deli.

"We were very busy, but we were in love," Helma said.

The family loves baseball, specifically the Yankees. Helma watched Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig play. She still roots on her favorite team, but today she cheers for Derek Jeter.

Nancy has lived with her grandmother since she was 2.

"My mother always tells me, even in the middle of the night and the pitch dark, I could find myself from my room to her room," Nancy Graham said.

Helma’s doctor, Steven Seltzer, said the family's bond is good for Helma's health.

"She does have some longevity in her family," Seltzer said. "And she also has very strong family support."

Helma’s medical history doesn’t hurt either.

"If you think about typhoid, think about tuberculosis and polio, she went through all of that and was unscathed when that was so common," Seltzer said.

The 110-year-old said her secret to longevity is hard work, but she says the world is different today.

"They’re lazy, they don’t wanna do too much work; they want somebody else to do the work," Helma said.

The super-centenarian is trying to understand the technology of today. At her birthday party, she learned about selfies.

"So stupid," she said.

Nancy said her grandmother tells it like it is. And at 110, it’s Helma’s comments and stories this family loves to hear.
