Polk County Sheriff's officials say a career criminal died in his sleep in a jail cell.

Officials say 54-year-old Greg Mitchell Hughes of Lakeland was unresponsive when deputies tried to wake him up for breakfast on Sunday. Detention deputies attempted CPR and the jail's medical staff assisted with life-saving measures until emergency crews arrived and pronounced him dead.

The sheriff's office says Hughes had a medical history and no foul play is suspected. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Hughes was arrested July 17 on charges including burglary, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and trespassing. He had seven prior convictions that included prison time.
