A worker was seriously injured Tuesday morning in St. Petersburg after being run over by a street sweeper he was operating.

According to St. Petersburg police, 54-year-old Mark John Tucker, of Tarpon Springs, suffered upper torso injuries in the accident at Jefferson Circle North and Fourth Street North. The accident happened just after 8 a.m. as the sweeper operator was attempting to get on the vehicle, police say.

The vehicle began to move as the man attempted to climb on, causing him to fall. The vehicle continued moving and ran over the man's upper body.

Tucker was rushed to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with what appeared to be critical injuries, according to police.

Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the accident.
