The Seminole Mall has been around since 1965 but in the last few years, the big stores have come and gone and much of the mall is now vacant.

But if one developer has its way, things will change.

The North American Development Group and Primercia Group one presented its designs to the Seminole City Council on Tuesday night.

They showed city councilors how they’d like to transform the 39 plus acres of property by demolishing it and replacing it with an entirely modern facility with a 12-screen movie theater, retail stores, restaurants, and a bank.

Meantime, people who live in Seminole like Stephanie Durbin, tried to remember the last time she shopped here.

"Five, 6 years ago," she said.

Durbin said she’s watched the mall slowly decline throughout the years.

Far from its heyday, the mall has plenty of abandoned stores and empty parking lots with its original anchor stores long gone.

"That is a waste of a facility over there,” said Durbin. “Once the Kmart closed, there's basically noting over there."

"Seminole Mall is the epicenter of our city," said Seminole Mayor Leslie Waters,

The mayor wants the mall not just to be a place for local shoppers but also a destination for visitors from other parts of Florida.

"I want to draw a lot of people,” said Mayor Waters.  “A lot of demographics to the new mall."

Waters added, "I want different unique stores that people from South Tampa, from Celebration, over to Orlando want to come on over."

Durbin believes that it developers build a new mall, customers will come.

"I think the business would be here as far as the people," said Durbin.

Now that the city council has seen the proposal, they will hold a workshop to talk about it.

There's been no formal action taken on any plans, at least not yet.

The new mall would eventually be named Seminole City Center. In fact, it was originally known as the city’s downtown area.
