Dozens of law enforcement K-9 handlers and their animals met in Weeki Wachee Tuesday for special training.

The annual event at Weeki Wachee State Springs Park helps trains dogs and their handlers for working in and around water.

"It's a good time to get out here, hit the water with the dogs expose them to the different elements out here," said Sgt. Ryan T. Glaze with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office. "(This) increases their chances of success. You know, out there on the road if we get on a track that leads them into a water area, pond or whatever the dogs get used to.

"That's why they're here in training getting that exposure and it gives confidence to the handler as well."

Glaze said that while the dogs are having fun, the training scenarios they are dealing with are beneficial, especially for chasing suspects in and out of water.
