A pregnant Inverness woman who was accidentally shot in the head Saturday has died, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office said.
Katherine Lynn Hoover - authorities originally gave her first name as Kathleen - and her husband, Carson Hoover, were visiting friends at 20079 Suncrest Drive in Brooksville around 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
William DeHayes was showing the Hoovers some of his guns, including a .22-caliber-revolver. The gun accidentally fired, and the bullet struck Katherine Hoover in the head, deputies said.
"I don't understand why the guy who did this is not being held accountable for his carelessness, negligence, recklessness," her brother, Gary Bryan, said. "Now my baby sister is gone and so is her son."
Katherine Hoover, 25, was five months pregnant. Doctors at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point removed the boy from her womb Saturday evening, and he was pronounced dead at 8:35 p.m.
Katherine Hoover then succumbed to her injuries at 3:04 a.m. Sunday.
Her family held onto each other tight after the news, trying to fight the pain. Katherine Hoover was the youngest of four kids.
"My sister was a beautiful person," said her sister Kayleigh Bryan. "There is not anything in the world I wouldn't give to have her back right now. My parents have to bury their daughter this week, and they have to bury a grandchild they never had the opportunity to meet."
Kayleigh held a piece of paper close with little foot prints from her baby nephew she'll never know.
"We will never heal from this," Gary Bryan said. "Never."
Family members say Katherine was out shopping for clothes for her new baby the day she was killed.
The case is still under investigation.
