Work is underway to save a historic theater in Citrus County but not everyone is happy about the plan.

The fence is up and work has started to fix up the historic Valerie Theater in downtown Inverness that has been falling apart for years. Sophia Diaz-Fonseca is a local business owner and she has a problem with the plan.

Diaz-Fonseca said city leaders missed the mark. She said the outside of the building should return to its original look from the 1920's when it was built and be historically accurate. The design the city is going with is different and Diaz-Fonseca said it doesn't fit in.

"That's why I have come out here to say this because I restored my own historic building and I know how important it is for us to keep our history," she said.

Diaz-Fonseca said city leaders promised to go with the original 1920's look back in 2011. Inverness City Manager Frank DiGiovanni said no promises were made.

"This is about the future," he said. "This is about the economy, businesses doing well and the only way we could bring that level of energy is to come up with the aggressive plans."

DiGiovanni said several design options were kicked around and the city council has made their choice. He said the Valerie project was never about a historic renovation.

"This is about developing a cultural center, not necessarily going back in time to a movie theater," he said.

Even though the project is underway, Diaz-Fonseca hopes city leaders will change their minds.

City leaders say the Valerie Theater project should be done by this April.
