A building boom is taking place in south Hillsborough County.

Several large subdivisions are under construction in the Ruskin and Apollo Beach areas.

Nancy Morin lives in the area and has two children going to school there at Eisenhower Middle School and East Bay High School.

"The last I heard the schools were pretty full, like very full, so I don't know how all those kids are going to fit in there with 4,000 homes going in," Morin said.

The Hillsborough County School District has come up with a plan to deal with growth in south Hillsborough County.

School officials are building three new schools in the area over the next five years and expanding Lennard High School.

"If they're seeing that some of their schools may be a little busy, they have a lot of kids in the classroom, we have some relief coming," said school spokesperson Tanya Arja.

Some of that relief is coming as early as this upcoming school year.

J. Vince Thompson Elementary School is set to open in Ruskin this August.

In 2015, 70 classrooms will be added to Lennard High School.

In 2016, a yet unnamed Middle School is planned for the Balm Road area and in 2018, the district hopes to build a K-8 school near the Waterset community.

"For new construction the money comes from impact frees and that's basically for new residential development. That means more houses are being built in these areas so impact fees come from that and that's what's going to pay for these new schools," said Arja.

Morin said a new school will be a welcome addition to her neighborhood.

"Yeah, I think it will be very family-oriented having a local school in the neighborhood and having all the neighborhood kids go together. It'll really bring everyone together."
