A jury found Richard McTear Jr. guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend's baby boy on Thursday evening.

McTear Jr., 26, is charged with causing the death of 3-month-old Emanuel Murray by throwing him out of his car window on Interstate 275 in May 2009.

He was found guilty on the following charges: first-degree murder, felony murder, burglary, aggravated child abuse, battery and kidnapping.

The infant's mother, Jasmine Bedwell hugged supporters once the verdict was read.

Sentencing begins on Monday. McTear faces life in prison or the death penalty.

It took the jury about 7 hours to find McTear guilty. Deliberations began around 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Prosectuors said McTear attacked Bedwell during a fight just before he drove off with the baby. After he was arrested, he was asked what happened and said "it's a dirty game."

Defense attorneys claimed McTear was innocent and argued during the trial that Bedwell was lying. They left court on Thursday without commenting on the verdict.

During final arguments Wednesday, McTear's attorneys said there is not enough evidence to legally tie McTear to the crime. Instead, defense attorneys said the baby's injuries could have been caused by Bedwell or her new boyfriend.

"This is a case about reasonable doubt," defense attorney Michael Peacock told the court on Wednesday. "That’s what this case is about. This is a case about the credibility of Jasmine Bedwell, the credibility."

The prosecution disagreed, saying McTear is responsible.

"The injuries to Murray (the baby) are entirely consistent with him having been ejected from a motor vehicle," prosecutor Ronald Gale said.

Both the child's mother and father are expected to present victim impact statements to the court during the sentencing.
