The major headache for Riverview drivers will continue today after overnight work failed to repair a water main break.

Northbound US 301 at Balm Riverview Road won't be open for the morning rush - and may not be ready by today's afternoon rush hour, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

The roadway, which is near the Alafia River, is closed while crews make repairs. Crews say the water main break created a large hole in the northbound lanes.

Crews were in the final stages of the repair early Thursday morning when attempts to control the leak failed and water began pouring out again.

According to officials, the 24-inch water line that is leaking has about 100 PSI of pressure. That is three time higher than what gets pumped into a home faucet.

Crews are now working to repair the line again.

After that, they will have to fill in the hole in 301 and repave the road.

On Wednesday afternoon, a construction team near the street was drilling and hit the water line, starting the problems for commuters.

The best alternate for getting around the mess is to take Big Bend Road and get on Interstate 75, according to Bay News 9 Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson.
