The Polk County Veterans Council is looking to honor those who served in World War II with a new memorial.

The group wants to put a the memorial at Veterans Park, in the middle of several other memorials.

“This is a beautiful place," said Polk County Veteran’s Council Chairman, Gary Clark. "The large oak trees, the memorials that are already here. You’ve got the Purple Heart Memorial here, the Henry Mills monument, of course the law enforcement memorial, veterans memorial and the fire fighter memorial.”

The estimated cost of the project is about 70 to 80,000, but Clark said it’s well worth it to honor those who fought for their country.

“There are people in this county who participated in D-Day," Clark said. "Unfortunately another five, six, seven years they may not be here.”

The group is hoping to start raising money to complete the first phase of the project.

“In the next couple of weeks we’re looking to raise about $7,500,” Clark said.

Clark wants to have the memorial completed by the end of the year.

The Veterans Council is also taking suggestions on what to put on certain sections of the memorial.
