Police may have prevented a tragedy early Wednesday when they stopped a driver they say was driving the wrong way on Interstate 275 in northern Hillsborough County.

Around 2 a.m, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office received a report of a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes of the highway, weaving in and out of one lane. Deputy Kevin Rettew quickly located the vehicle and pulled it over near the I-275 and I-75 split.

According to Rettew, Carlyle Seymour Clark, 65, of Tampa showed signs of impairment, including bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech and fumbling with his fingers. Clarke agreed to perform a series of sobriety tests and displayed multiple signs of impairment, Rettew said.

Clarke was taken to Central Breath Testing, where his blood alcohol concentration measured 2.68 and 2.52, or more than three times the level at which the state assumes impairment. Deputies arrested Clarke and charged him DUI/second violation.

In February, two crashes 12 days apart caused by wrong-way drivers on I-275 in north Tampa killed a total of six people.

On Feb. 9, Daniel Lee Morris drove a sport utility vehicle against traffic and slammed into a car, killing himself and the four USF fraternity brothers in the car. Then, on Feb. 21, Chase Kaleb Leveille did a U-turn on the interstate and crashed into a box truck, killing himself.
