A 30-year-old man was arrested Thursday night in Pinellas Park after firing a shot at a police dog chasing him.

According to Pinellas Park police, Jason Michael Lopez was taken into custody after a short chase near the 5500 block of 92nd Place North.

Police responded to a call of a man pushing a pregnant woman and made contact with Lopez at the home just before 10 p.m. The woman at the home told police Lopez battered her and that she was pregnant with his child.

Lopez fled the home and ran out into the backyard, police said.

Two K-9 units were sent out to track Lopez and he was spotted in a neighboring backyard at 5801 91st Ave. N.

Lopez ignored an order to surrender and dogs were sent in to apprehend him. That's when, police say, Lopez fired a gunshot at one of the dogs. The animal and handler were not struck.

According to police, Lopez threw the gun into another yard where it was later recovered.

Lopez, who was injured by the dog while being apprehended, was taken to an area hospital.

After being released, he was charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant female, carrying a concealed firearm, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, attempted offense against police dog, great bodily harm or death and armed burglary.
