A 22-year-old man was arrested after detectives said he robbed an autistic man who had just left an Auburndale convenience store.

Travis Smith is facing charges of robbery and petit theft in connection with the incident, which happened 4:15 p.m. Monday outside the Super Discount convenience store on Dairy Road.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the man had just left the store, where he bought some snacks, when he was approached by a man on a bicycle who demanded his money.

Detectives said the suspect threatened to hurt the victim by shooting him and "blowing his head off," then taking the man's money and cell phone.  He then demanded the victim take him to the victim's house so the suspect could steal the victim's father's car, detectives said.

Detectives said that the suspect, later identified as Smith, did not brandish a firearm, but the victim was in fear for his life, and he agreed to walk home while the suspect followed.

When Smith and the victim arrived at the victim's home, the victim's father came outside. Detectives said the victim got behind his father and told his father to get a gun. The father ordered the suspect to leave and took a photo of him on his cell phone, which detectives used to help identify the suspect.

Smith was arrested overnight and booked into the Polk County Jail without further incident.
