In the week since the Hernando County Sheriff's Office placed a permanent drug drop-off box in the lobby of its headquarters, more than 20 pounds of unwanted medication has been disposed of.
Sheriff Al Nienhuis called the response "overwhelming."
The sheriff's office issued a reminder Tuesday about what cannot be disposed through the drop-off box:
- Needles, sharps, and/or syringes. They must be taken to the landfill at either 14450 Landfill Road in Brooksville or 2525 Osowaw Boulevard in Spring Hill.
- Any liquids. They must be taken to the landfill at 14450 Landfill Road in Brooksville.
- Inhalers. They must be taken to the landfill at 14450 Landfill Road in Brooksville only.
Very large quantities of unwanted medication must also be taken to a landfill, the sheriff's office said.
