A pair of drivers were charged with DUI manslaughter for an accident that left a 17-year-old pedestrian dead who was crossing Gulf Boulevard in St. Pete Beach last March.

Patsy Harris, 50, first struck Patrick McLean, 17, as he was walking across the 4900 block of Gulf Boulevard at 12:44 a.m. on March 22, according to Pinellas Sheriff's deputies. Harris told deputies she did not see the teen before hitting him. Witness Tiffany Gilbert, who crossed the street ahead of the victim, told deputies McLean was still alive after being hit by Harris.

Gilbert said she began waving her arms and shouting for other vehicles to stop so they would not run over the victim again. Gilbert said a van stopped but the driver of a red car looked at her as he passed and ran over McLean a second time, according to an arrest warrant. That driver, Sean Daniel, 27, told deputies by the time he saw the teen lying in the road he had no time to react. McLean was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both drivers stopped and consented to a voluntary blood alcohol draw, according to deputies. Harris' blood alcohol content came back at .14 and Daniel's was .19, more than double the legal limit, according to an arrest warrant.

The teen's dad, Michael McLean, 63, said he's angry about the drivers' high BAC levels but does not want to see them serve prison time.

"If they weren’t driving, it wouldn’t have happened. It’s just upsetting," he said. "Putting people in jail for this, I don’t think that’s the answer. Like I say, I almost wish they (drivers) would’ve contacted me and maybe said, ‘hey, we’re sorry.'"

McLean said a prison sentence will not bring his son back but he would like to see the drivers make a donation to a charity and perform community service hours.

"Putting them in jail? I don’t see any justice in that,” he said. "I miss him, I miss him dearly. Every day."

Harris and Daniel turned themselves into the Pinellas Jail on Wednesday after learning warrants had been issued for their arrest. Both drivers were booked on a $100,000 bond. Daniel was also charged with driving on a suspended license. Harris posted bail Wednesday afternoon.
