The Manatee County School District is reaching out to the FBI to help track down $3 million in missing money.

District leaders said a recent audit found $3 million from a 2009, $45 million sales tax bond was spent. However, they don’t know on what because there is no proper documentation for the unaccounted money.

This week, school board members voted unanimously to turn the issue over to the FBI for further investigation.

“It was a prudent step for tax payers and bond holders that we precede with having it reviewed by law enforcement and authorities,” school board member David "Watchdog" Miner. “We are not trying to cast a cloud on anyone but there’s something that’s not in regular form.”

In 2012, Dr. Tim McGonegal resigned as Superintendent after it was revealed there were major budget problems.

A spokesman with the FBI said they have been contacted about the matter and will conduct a preliminary review to determine if any federal laws were violated.
