Polk County residents will vote in three school board races on August 26 for the primary election.

In District 3, incumbent Hazel Sellers faces Randy Wilkinson.

If reelected, Sellers said her top priority this term will be to address poverty in the district’s school and all the issues related to it. With that, she hopes to bring back extensive summer school programs among of few other ideas.

Sellers has a very strong background in education, including a master’s degree and 30 years of experience as an educator in the classroom and at the district level.

Wilkinson said his top priority would be to promote more discipline in school by giving teachers more authority and support.

Wilkinson is a former school board member and county commissioner who is also a concerned parent with two daughters in Polk County schools.

In District 6, incumbent Debra Wright faces Lynn Wilson.

If reelected, Wright wants to improve academics across the district by continuing to work on classroom support in various areas.

Wilson’s priorities are with ensuring the district’s finances are managed in a more responsible manner as well as putting additional focus on individuals who are not traditionally college-bound students.

In District 7, incumbent Tim Harris faces Lisa Miller.

If reelected, Harris will be an advocate for fiscal responsibility, academic accountability and attempt to reduced state mandates.

Miller wants to improve outcomes for all students, improve communication between the district and schools and increase behavior support and interventions.
