It will soon require less energy to light the night in Clearwater.

Starting this week and through the next 15 months, Duke Energy contractors will replace all of the city’s 11,290 incandescent bulb streetlights with light emitting diode, or LED, bulbs that produce the same amount of light.

When this project is complete, the city’s entire street lighting network will be converted to smarter technology at no additional cost to the city. The project will begin in the Countryside area around Sept. 1, and crews will work south and west until the project is complete.

City officials said there will be minimal impact to residents through the conversion process. Residents will see uniformed Duke Energy contractors wearing reflective vests and badges that identify themselves as working with Duke Energy.

“I’m pleased that with Duke Energy, we’re able to convert all of the city’s streetlights to LED,” said Paul Bertels, Traffic Operations Manager. “This will enhance safety and lend to a more aesthetically pleasing look along Clearwater’s streets and roadways.”
