It's back to school today for Pinellas County and the majority of Bay area students.

And there are plenty of changes in the county as the new year starts.

Pinellas opened two new schools and is offering more Voluntary Pre-K opportunities, more STEM labs in more elementary and middle schools and upgraded technology centers across the county.

"This is one of the most exciting years we're ever had for Pinellas County schools," said Superintendent Mike Grego.

Kings Highway Elementary, one of the two new elementary schools, is completely wired.

The new, high-tech school in Clearwater will take attendance with a wall touch screen. Students will receive their own iPad and use it for homework, tests and interaction with teachers.

"And through iPad, we're going to be able to differentiate their learning," said first grade teacher Kerri Barnes. "So, I might have a student here in first grade who comes in and maybe knows a little bit of their alphabet. I can set up their iPad to where they can get that extra practice at home.

"Whereas another student sitting right next to them might know how to read. So I can set up their iPad to where they can go home and read books."

Gulf Beaches Elementary in St. Pete Beach is the other new technology-focused school opening.

School officials also said more emphasis will be placed on parent-interaction this year as well.

Today also is the first day of school in Pasco, Hernando, Polk and Manatee schools. Hillsborough County students return to class on Tuesday.
