The city of Tampa is working to repair two water main breaks.

On Monday, a pipe broke near the intersection of Dale Mabry and Ballast Point Blvd. On Tuesday, a break occurred on Ashley Drive and Tyler Street.

Brad Baird, the director of the Tampa Water Department, said both breaks were caused by a water hammer.

"A water hammer occurs when you're closing valves, starting pumps, stopping pumps and that creates a shockwave in the water through the pipeline and then the pipeline ends up rupturing at the weakest point," said Baird.

He said it's not an uncommon problem. Baird said the city averages 8 pipeline breaks a day.

"It just so happens that these 2 breaks are on major arteries that are heavily traveled so people notice," said Baird.

Suong Le works in a hair salon near the break on Dale Mabry.

"I came out and I saw the water all over, like a pond," said Le.

She worried about how the road closure would affect her business.

"Thank God it's steady," she said.

The repairs did cause delays for Ursula Horton who had to take detours to get her great grandson to school.

"It just takes five minutes extra, a little extra gas, too," she said.

Baird said the city has old pipes and there are bound to be some problems.

"The key is getting out in front of that, being proactive and replacing the worst of the worst before it breaks too many times," he said.
