Investigators believe the fire that destroyed a Dade City home early Wednesday morning was an accident that started in the garage while the family was sleeping.

Homeowner Daryn Partain said he and his wife awoke in their home on Sky Ridge Circle to the sound of smoke detectors going off just after 4 a.m.

"You know when they're all going off and you see some smoke, it's time to get out," Partain said.

The couple quickly rounded up their three children and got them across the street, where a neighbor called 911.

Meanwhile, Partain bravely headed back inside the home to find his in-laws.

"By the time I got back to the area, they were up out of bed trying to find their way through," Partain said.  But their area was all filled with smoke."

Using the light from his cell phone to see, Partain said he was able to guide them both out to safety.

Minutes later, fire crews arrived.  Lack of fire hydrants in the area meant they had to use five water tankers to shuttle water to the area. It took nearly three hours to get the blaze under control and one firefighter was taken to the hospital and treated for exhaustion.

The exact cause of the fire that destroyed the 6,000 square foot home is still under investigation. Meanwhile a fund for the Partain family has been set up online.
