Armed guards at all Manatee County Schools are a very real possibility in the future. Tuesday, board members will talk about how much it will cost to make it happen.

When Crystal Horton picks up her 10-year-old daughter from Wakeland Elementary School, there's an armed police officer directing traffic. But during the school day, that officer isn't there which worries Crystal a little bit.

“With Columbine, kids bringing weapons from home, kids being bullied I feel like that need to be stopped,” Horton said.

As of now there are only two elementary schools in Manatee County with armed officers but that could change.

On Tuesday the Manatee County School Board will be voting on whether to place armed guards in all of Manatee County elementary schools. So far the majority of parents we spoke with say they like the idea.

“I would like to think that God forbid something awful happened, there would be someone here to protect the children,” said mother Margaret Normandin.

“I feel it’s a little crazy out there and to have somebody to keep the staff and the students safe in case somebody comes onto the campus, I’m perfectly fine with that,” said Drew Appelt.

If the school board members approve, the guards would carry guns at all times. However, they wouldn't be police officers.

They’ll be from a private security company. Jessica Briones is a little worried the guns could end up in the wrong hands.

The board will consider a $1 million contract with Sarasota Security Patrol. The company provides armed guards that will be placed in all 33 elementary schools.

There is at least one school board member against the idea of armed guards. Dave Miner isn't in favor of it. And he said the sheriff isn't either, because the guards aren't trained law enforcement.
