There’s a push for home improvements in some St. Petersburg neighborhoods.

"We’re trying to turn around Midtown, Childs Park,” said St. Petersburg City Councilman, Karl Nurse. “So we’re trying to spur serious renovations in those neighborhoods."

A big incentive for improvements, the city has increased the rebate offered by its “Rebates for Residential Rehabs” program.

"We’re trying to pick up the pace,” said Councilman Nurse. “The change was from a 20 percent rebate to a 30 percent rebate and, in addition, we will rebate back through the end of this year the permitting fees.”

The big push is for substantial renovations, such as a new roof, electrical, plumbing, air conditioning and heating. The minimum rehab investment is $10,000. The program has already led to renovations and even new construction.

Mirium Cooper likes what she’s seeing in her neighborhood.

"Makes me feel good. I love it,” said Cooper.

Nurse said the entire neighborhood ends up benefiting.

"It will raise that house's value, but also the surrounding houses," Nurse said.

The hope is that, with the increased incentive, it will lead to more renovations.

"It will be a better community, and a better place to live," said Roberta Elias.
