In Pinellas County, there are nine places where traffic can cross the Intercoastal Waterway.

For a short period of time next month, there will only be eight.

The county has plans to close the Park Boulevard bridge to vehicle traffic for 30 days beginning Sept. 29.

According to county engineer Tom Menke, engineers decided he bridge is in need of additional repairs after an incident last year in which several bolts were stripped off the mechanism that lifts the bridge.

For a month, vehicular, bike and pedestrian traffic on Park Boulevard will be detoured to alternate routes. Traffic to the north will use the Indian Rocks Beach Bridge, while drivers to the south will use the Tom Stuart Causeway.  Alternate US 19/Seminole Boulevard will take traffic between the two alternate spans.

Menke says the project date, originally scheduled for earlier this summer, had to be changed.

"Our original anticipated road closure was late June," he said. "Our schedule got pushed back a little bit. We put out one press release. We tried to retract that and change it but unfortunately word hasn't gotten out to everybody."

Should a tropical storm or hurricane be expected within five days of the project start, it will be postponed until the storm passes.

If coastal evacuations are necessary after work begins, the county will order the project paused. The bridge will be lowered and traffic will be allowed to pass.
