A Tampa teenager hit by a driver on her way home from school said she never saw the car coming.

Monesha McDuffie, 18, was walking home from D.W. Waters Career Center on Monday when she was hit by a car driven by 23-year-old Malik Majied, police said.

"Honestly, I don't remember anything but a big push and then waking up to a bunch of paramedics around me and my man," said McDuffie.

Tampa police say McDuffie was trapped under the car. Neighbors pulled her out and her mother, Tavia Morgan, rushed to the scene.

"It was horrible," said Morgan. "My baby was screaming and hollering for me. They had her clothes cut off her and her skin was off and she was bleeding and crying. Everybody was around her doing something."

McDuffie was badly burned by car oil but she doesn't have any broken bones or internal injuries. She said friends and family are helping her heal.

"My family's been here, I've been praying and getting a lot of pain medicine," she said from her hospital bed.

McDuffie and her family said they don't hate the driver but her mother said she is angry.

"If it was up to me, I'd line you up somewhere and throw motor oil on you, hot motor oil," said Morgan.

The family said they will be at the driver's court appearances.

In the meantime, McDuffie said she will focus on getting better and getting back to school.

She said she's studying to be a nurse.

Majied had been charged with driving under the influence, causing great bodily injury.

Police said he was also charged with violating his probation on previous drug charges.
