A man whose decomposed body was found under a vacant Lakeland house was electrocuted, officials said.

Police began investigating the man's death at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, after they received a report about a body found beneath a house on New Tampa Highway. When officers arrived, they found the man's body partially under the house.

Police said they could only confirm that the person was a man, but that they could not determine the man's identity or race due to the level of decomposition.

The Medical Examiner's Office has ruled that the man died as a result of accidental electrocution.

Detectives said it appears as though the man was attempting to steal electric wiring from the home when he was electrocuted.

Officials are now working to make a positive identification of the deceased.

The investigation continues.
