A Pasco County inmate is back in jail facing an additional felony charge after escaping briefly while being medically cleared.

Deputies say inmate Juan Gabriel Lopez escaped from Bayfront Health in Dade City late Thursday morning.

Lopez, 30, was originally arrested by Dade City police officers late Wednesday night for misdemeanor warrants for failure to pay child support and failure to appear in court for a driving with suspended license charge.

Thursday, he was taken to the hospital to be medically cleared from a previous injury. Deputies said Lopez escaped from the hospital about 11:30 a.m.

About 11:50 a.m., deputies said Lopez, wearing orange and white inmate garb, was apprehended by a Pasco Sheriff's Office detective in the area of Fort King Road and Marlu Lane in Dade City, which is about 1/4 of a mile away from the hospital.

Lopez was being guarded by members of G4S, a security company that provides hospital security for low-risk inmates.

The circumstances surrounding Lopez's escape is currently under investigation. Sheriff's office helicopter and K-9 Unit had been deployed, but were not needed. Lopez now faces an additional charge of escape, which is a felony.

His escape led to lockdowns at Pasco Elementary, Pasco Middle, Pasco High, and Cox Elementary schools as well as the East Bus Garage.
