Two big Florida names faced off tonight on opposing sides of the medical marijuana issue.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd and well known attorney John Morgan discussed the issue during a forum hosted by Bay News 9's partner paper The Ledger.

The panel, which included Vote No On 2 coalition director Jessica Spencer, went in depth on Amendment 2, which would grant the right to use marijuana for the treatment of certain ailments when recommended by a physician.

"Are we going to wait another 30 to 40 years for the pharmaceutical companies to make billions of dollars when we have an herb, a plant put into nature for us, by God that works?" argued Morgan on Thursday.

Sheriff Grady Judd has been a vocal opponent of Amendment 2 and, as president of the Florida Sheriff's Association, lobbied against it in Tallahassee earlier this summer.

He told the crowded auditorium that the language in the amendment is too broad and would allow anyone to use medical marijuana, not just people with debilitating diseases.

"I don't know anybody that's not compassionate and doesn't want that, but Amendment 2 in its current form worries me," said Judd. "It's my job as your sheriff to say beware of the consequences."

On a special upcoming edition of Bay News 9's Political Connections, we'll break down the amendment, listen to arguments on both sides and run claims about the proposal through PolitiFact's Truth-O-Meter.
