Former longtime Manatee High football coach Joe Kinnan has submitted a notice of retirement.

The notice, effective Wednesday, ensures that an administrative complaint against him will be dropped.

Kinnan had kept a low profile since his leave of absence from high school football earlier this summer. Kinnan won nearly 300 games, collected five state titles and led the Hurricanes to seven state championship appearances in 29 years as head coach.

Kinnan has been on medical leave since December, when the Manatee County School District Superintendent Rick Mills recommended Kinnan also be suspended from his duties as athletic director.

His athletic department faced a sexual assault allegation surrounding a former assistant football coach and a financial misconduct fine levied against the baseball program.

Earlier this month, Kinnan addressed the issues surrounding his former department, saying he had repeatedly been investigated, hit with a gag order, told to resign or retire, and smeared with lies in the media.

Mills, meanwhile, released a statement thanking Kinnan for his contributions.

"I want to congratulate Coach Joe Kinnan on his Hall of Fame career at Manatee High School," Mills said. "And I thank him for the positive impact he has had on thousands of young people in our community.

"His coaching record of 290 victories, 27 district titles and five state championships over the course of nearly three decades is an example of sustained excellence on the football field. However, we cannot comment on any pending administrative complaints."

A three-time cancer survivor, Kinnan was on medical leave when he said he was informed his contract would not be renewed.
