Two people were injured early Friday when their car skidded off a Tampa street and into a daycare center.

According to Tampa police, the car was in the westbound lanes of Busch Boulevard near north 46th Street at 3:30 a.m. when the driver lost control, hit a concrete median and skidded across the street.

The vehicle slammed into the Achievement Center For Early Learning building at 4609 East Busch Blvd. The car ended up flipped over onto its roof and the building was left with a gaping hole in the front wall.

The two people in the vehicle, a woman in her 30s and a woman in her 20s, were taken to Tampa General Hospital as trauma alerts. Their conditions have not been released.

Owner Vincent Hernandez said the center, which serves about 80 children ages 1 to 11, was not open Friday.

"It looks pretty bad for that room," he said. "Everything else looks intact. That room is definitely going to need some serious repairs to it, being the face of the building of the structure."

Hernandez said that he's relieved the crash didn't happen while anyone was at the school.

"Very scary, very scary," he said. "Just very thankful this happened in the middle of the night and not during work hours...and nobody was there."

Crews arrived by mid-day to begin the cleanup process.

“We were calling them as they were pulling in to drop off their child," said Hernandez. "Some of them were calling us to let us know they’d seen it on television.”

The school is expected to be reopened on Tuesday. Vincent and crew will be laboring through Labor Day to make sure their students can get back to what they know.

“I just want to get it done and get it done right," said Hernandez. "I want to get it done quickly. I want to get that room back open and get my kids back in the classroom where they need to be.”

The crash is under investigation.
