A new effort to help cut down on crime took place in Clearwater on Saturday.

Police hosted a seminar to talk to residents about ways to protect themselves.

Officers told the crowd that safety doesn't have to be expensive, it's all about exploring your options.

For instance, if you can't afford a burglar or motion detector system, they recommend putting timers on your lights when you're going to be away from home. Police also said during the seminar that homeowners should trim bushes and trees so it's harder for potential criminals to hide.

Clearwater Police Chief Dan Slaughter said his department is depending on residents to help them cut crime.

"There's 108,000 of them and there's only 235 of us," said Slaughter. "We're codependent on each other."

Chief Slaughter said that 69 percent of the car burglaries they respond to are unlocked vehicles.
