Citrus County students had a smooth first day back to school on Wednesday.

Students at Rock Crusher Elementary School in Homosassa said they are ready for the new year.

"You learn a lot of new things that can come in handy in life," said Alex McIntosh.

Students around the county are starting off on the right foot. The district earned an A for the last school year and was named a top 10 district in the state.

"We're proud of what our students have done," said Superintendent Sandra Himmel. "We're proud of what our teachers have done."

Himmel says a successful school year comes from things like a focus on technology, constant professional development and much more.

According to Rock Crusher Elementary Principal Rene Johnson, it's a group effort.

"It's our staff, it's our parents, it's our community," said Johnson. "We are a community and that's what it takes to make our students succeed."

For a few years now, Citrus has traditionally been the first county to head back to school. School officials said some of the bus routes might end up changing over the next couple days. They said by the end of the week, everything should be smoothed out.

Students in Hernando, Pasco, Manatee, Polk and Pinellas counties return to classes Monday, Aug. 18.

Hillsborough students will be the last in the area to get back to the books, returning to school Aug. 19.
