The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is about to become the first Purple Heart Law Enforcement Agency in the nation.

A ceremony is set for Thursday, which is National Purple Heart Day and recognizes those who have received the highest military honor.

The Aaron A. Weaver Chapter 776, Military Order of the Purple Hear (named after local soldier Aaron A. Weaver, who was killed in action in 2004) and special guests will be on hand for the event.

George Washington created the purple heart medal, called the Military Badge of Merit, on Aug. 7, 1782 to honor soldiers for "singularly meritorious action." The badge originally permitted its wearer to pass guards and sentinels without challenge, and the honoree's name and regiment were inscribed in a "Book of Merit."*

The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Emergency Operations Center in Lecanto, 3549 Saunders Way. Sheriff Jeff Dawsy will make remarks, read a proclamation and present plaques to be displayed at headquarters and the EOC.
