There's an idea being kicked around in Citrus County for a new animal shelter and it involves the county jail.

Animals and inmates could form an interesting combination, according to officials.

County leaders say they need a bigger animal shelter because of overcrowding and there is an unusual proposition on the table.

Corrections Corporation of America runs the county jail. They're offering to build a new shelter on county land right next to the jail in Lecanto. Inmates could be used for construction and used to take care of the animals.

County resident Lanette McKinley likes the idea.

"I'm sure they need a lot more room and space," McKinley said. "Unfortunately, I mean it's a shame people don't take care of their animals."

It wouldn't be a gift. The county would work out a deal and pay CCA back over time.

In order for the plan to move forward the county commission would have to give it the thumbs up.

CCA is expected to pitch their plan to the county commission on August 12.
