In May, crossing guard Doug Carey was hit and killed at Gulf to Bay and Belcher in Clearwater.

Weeks later at that same intersection, a motorcyclist was hit and literally did cartwheels over a car before miraculously walking away.

The Florida Department of Transportation has since taken a closer look at the intersection.

In its final report, the agency released a detailed list of 26 suggested changes to make the area safer.

School crossing signs will be replaced with yield to pedestrian signage, because crossing guards will no longer be there.

Pinellas County schools added a bus stop on the north end of Gulf to Bay that will shuttle Oak Grove Middle School students back and forth. The stop eliminates the need for those students to cross there.

The bus stop will be ready for the start of the school year. As a added precaution, crossing guards will be present for the first few days while students adjust to the change.

Rob Shaw with the Clearwater Police Department says it's safer for everyone.

"The accident involving Doug Carey really affected the Department, the crossing guards and just I think the City as well in a great way. So I think anything that minimizes the risk to those crossing guards has to be a good thing," said Shaw.

Some of the suggested improvements have been implemented. A fresh coat of paint covers and completes pavement markings at the crosswalks.

Crews were out Wednesday working on traffic signals, installing flashing yellow lights.

The list also includes widening sidewalks, replacing signal heads and optimizing timing and lighting.

The audit also suggests more red light camera signs and putting them further back.
