Polk County Sheriff’s deputies are trying to identify a pedestrian killed Thursday in a traffic accident.

The victim was hit by a vehicle approximately 9 p.m. on South Florida Avenue near Creative Drive in Lakeland.

Deputies said the driver saw the pedestrian but did not have time to react, striking him with the front of vehicle.

Deputies say the victim was not carrying identification and is believed to be homeless. They said he was born in Mexico or Guatemala. Deputies are trying to confirm his idenity and locate family members.

The investigaiton into the crash is ongoing, but deputies said impairment, excessive speed, or distracted driving do not appear to be factors.
