A new high school program is taking off in Hernando County.

Students now have the opportunity to aim high when it comes to a career in the sky.

Ninth grader Matthew Campbell has wanted to fly since age eight.

"I'm all the way for private pilot," he said. "That's my goal and then commercial."

Getting behind the controls of a plane is the purpose of the program.

This is the first year of the Hernando Aerospace Technology Program at Nature Coast Technical High School.

It is a three year program that basically covers all the ground work to become a pilot, and opens the doors to careers in aviation or aerospace technology.

Mike Runyan teaches the new program. He said the need for pilots will be going up in the years to come, especially here in Florida which is a popular spot for aviation.

"It is a great opportunity for them," he said.

The school district has also teamed up with Corporate Jet Solutions at the airport, so the students can get up close and personal with the planes.
