A 70-year-old worker was transported to Tampa General Hospital after falling inside a ship’s cargo hold.

Tampa Fire Rescue responded to a call at the CSX terminal at 3701 Causeway Blvd shortly after 8 p.m. Monday.

The man is a contract inspector at the port and was conducting an inspection aboard the phosphate ship Mount Hope when he fell nearly 10 feet inside the cargo hold, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

TFR's heavy rescue team along with the HAZMAT incident team, ladder truck and multiple rescue units arrived at the scene and began immediate actions to bring the injured man to safety.

Firefighters entered the hold, stabilized the man on a backboard and carefully lifted him out of the hold and transported him to an awaiting rescue car where he was then transported to the hospital as a trauma alert.
