A St. Petersburg man is facing charges after detectives said a 5-month-old baby in his care died after being left home alone.

Jason Walker, 29, is facing charges of child neglect in connection with the July 5 death of the baby boy.

Detectives said they began investigating after the baby was found unresponsive in his cradle on July 3.  The baby was taken to a local hospital, where he died two days later.

Investigators said Walker had been left to care for the baby on July 3, but during that time he left the baby home alone in his cradle twice for extended periods of time so he could run errands.

When Walker returned home, he found the baby unresponsive and face down on a blanket, deputies said.

The Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office found the cause of death to be asphyxiation.

Walker was already at the Pinellas County Jail on unrelated charges when detectives charged him with child neglect.
