Do you have any china from grandma, a toy from childhood or an old figurine around your house?

It might be worth something. One way to find out is to take those gems from the past to a local antique store for evaluation.

Dealers such as Patrice Weaver and Ron Gicka at the Now & Then Antique Store are a great resource.

“I’ll tell you what it will sell for in the condition it is now and where you should best sell it,” Patrice said.

Keep in mind: If a dealer buys it, he or she will only pay about half of what it will sell for.

Age, rarity and condition are major factors in determining value.

“It’s a grown-up treasure hunt and it’s available to anyone,” Patrice said.

Other tips:

  • Before selling an item, do research online on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Craigslist. But be sure to compare items in similar condition and look at the “sold for” price, not the list price.
