The city of Gulfport has passed a resolution supporting same-sex marriage.

City council members voted 5-0 in support of the resolution. The resolution states Gulfport supports changing state laws banning same-sex marriage.

It was drafted by council member Yolanda Roman.

"It adds to the argument," said Roman. "It adds to the other cities and other municipalities around Florida that have done resolutions so I think when you start putting the pieces of the puzzle together it tells one story eventually."

Before the vote, several people took to the podium encouraging the city council to pass the resolution.

"What it says to the LGBT community is, it states that we support your equal rights. It doesn't get us any rights today but it's saying you're on your way and this is long overdue," said Barbara Banno.

Gulfport was also one of the first communities in Pinellas County to provide a domestic partner registry.

Council members said they plan to send a copy of the resolution to the Governor's office and other state and federal officials.
