There are some new school guidelines in place that have some parents scratching their heads.

Ken Heimann has been a pharmacist for more than 30 years. He is also a parent.

"I think common sense is definitely out the window," he said. "Especially in this case."

State education leaders have created some new guidelines. One of them says students now need a doctor’s note in order to bring over the counter medications to school. That includes cough drops, lip balm and even sunscreen.

School districts have the power to tweak the guidelines and that is exactly what's happening in Citrus County. The school board plans to make some exceptions, especially to things like sunscreen and lip balm. School superintendent Sandra Himmel says it's the right thing to do.

"We talked about using a little bit of common sense of what could make it a little easier for our parents," she said.

Alison West has four kids in school and thinks needing a doctor’s note for something like cough drops is silly, so she's glad school leaders want to make some exceptions.

"That would be a good thing," she said. "That would be way better."

The Citrus County School Board is expected to vote on their changes in the next few weeks.

The school board is having their legal folks look things over before the vote.
