The family of Nicholas Leonard had never heard of Adam Matos before the murder of their son.

Leonard, along with his new girlfriend, Megan Brown, and her parents Margaret and Greg Brown were found dead last week. Matos, Brown's ex-boyfriend and father of her child, is the primary suspect in their murders.

During a press conference Monday, Leonard’s family said he never talked about Matos, or any problems Brown was having with him. A family spokesperson took the podium as Leonard's parents, aunt and sister stood close by.

The family said Leonard started dating Brown shortly after she moved to Hudson from Pennsylvania with her parents in July. Although the relationship was short, the family said the couple had many good times and had a lot of respect for each other.

Leonard was also popular in the neighborhood, known as a handy man and someone who liked to help others.

"Nicholas went above and beyond for any friend in need. He was a kindhearted soul who always made people laugh," said Michael Shoup, family spokesperson. "The mother, father, sister of Nicholas Leonard and the rest of our family ask for privacy at this time of sorrow as we prepare to celebrate the lives of Nicholas, Megan and Megan's parents to allow them to rest together in peace."

New details released in assault case

As the Brown and Leonard families prepare to say goodbye, Matos remains jailed on $200,000 bond on an aggravated assault charge stemming from an accusation he pulled a kitchen knife on Megan Brown on Aug. 28.

According to the incident report, Brown said Matos was home drunk when she came home later than normal. She said Matos told her, "I will (expletive) kill you if you don't tell me where you've been."

According to the report, Brown went into their 4-year-old son Tristan's room. He was sleeping at the time but the report states, Matos followed her, backed her into the corner and held the kitchen knife up to her neck. All of it was enough to wake Tristan up and that's when investigators say Matos dropped the knife and ran.

When authorities arrive, Brown said she feared for her life. She said Matos was staying there with them because he had nowhere else to go.

She said Matos took off by bike. He wasn't seen again until the night authorities arrested him in Tampa.

Meanwhile, investigators are still looking for a knife and gun, the possible murder weapons. If and when those are found, murder charges could come at any time, according to the sheriff's office.

Tristan is with family now and no longer in state custody.
